Dr. Made Widyanetta's Artist Statement

When you see me, ask to see my work ID because that’s when I can tell you that I am, in fact, a doctor in the Emergency Medicine Department at NYU Langone Medical Center. Now those who know me know very well that I am blatantly lying about this. Okay, it’s true that I have an ID for Langone and it’s true that I am part of the Emergency Medicine Department, but (as you can probably tell) I am not a doctor.

Let me repeat. I am NOT a doctor nor am I interested in pursuing the field of medicine.

Now you might be wondering, “Why does she have an ID for NYU Langone then?” It’s simple. Everyone should whip out their phones and follow @nycpep on Instagram before I can proceed. Did you do it? Perfect.

So what is the Prevention and Education Partnership (PEP), you ask? PEP is an initiative by ER doctors at NYU and Bellevue Hospital that teaches young adults, teens, and college students about sex, drugs, and more through social media. This is where I come in.

I work as a graphic designer and the creative director for PEP and every single graphic in the Instagram was created by me. As an intern at PEP, my eyes were opened to a world that I never knew existed; a world that I could take a part in helping. Let me ask you, what is ketamine? What’s fentanyl? What’s naloxone?

If you don’t know the answer to these questions, then this is where PEP steps in. We always hear adults tell young people to “say no to drugs” but does that work? Does that really work? But will teaching a young person that fentanyl is 50 times more dangerous than heroin make them rethink their choices? We don’t tell the youth what to do but teach them what to know. If they knew that naloxone is an antidote used to reverse opioid overdose, would they tell that to friends and families who are in risk of an overdose?

I never realized how much I’ve grown to appreciate the medical field. My boss, Dr. Larissa Laskowski, is so dedicated to her craft and created PEP as a result. The team’s love and compassion towards those my age made me realize that I too can have a part in helping people stay out of the ER. The doctors have an idea and a vision and it’s my work that makes these ideas tangible.

That’s when I realized how powerful film and media is. I’m an 18-year old freshman pursuing a major in film and I have the power to stop my friends from going to the hospital. I have the power to change somebody’s life with my graphics and films - and I strive to get better at it.

So go ahead, ask to see my work ID. Because that’s when I can proudly tell you where my passions lie.
